One of the two most important ethnographic collections in Switzerland !
The MEG is an architectural symbol in the Plainpalais district. The MEG is a museum that addresses major issues facing human societies today and offers a perspective on global societal and environmental challenges. Its collections are to be discovered in magnificent exhibitions, whether permanent or temporary, which highlight the museum's treasures through fascinating immersive scenographies. The permanent exhibition offers a journey titled "Dialogue," which explores objects with ethical issues, such as stolen items, human remains, or sacred objects. This journey traces the exchanges with source communities to determine the legitimacy of their presentation. "Dialogue" will evolve over time, adapting to new research and collaborations. The permanent exhibition is complemented by another exhibition titled "Encounters," which examines the relationship between communities and museum collections. Through a series of portraits and interviews, individuals share their personal connections with objects from the MEG collections. In contrast to these historical testimonies, visitors can immerse themselves in societal issues by exploring temporary exhibitions. In 2017, the MEG received the prestigious EMYA Award, the European Museum of the Year Award, the highest distinction for a museum in Europe. Designed as a true cultural hub, the MEG offers a wide range of activities: performances, concerts, conferences, film screenings, workshops, and guided tours are just a sample of the experiences available to the public in connection with the exhibitions. It also features a café, a library, a music lounge, and a flower-filled esplanade.
